A year ago, I decided to survey thousands of Combat athletes asking them what barriers they were facing with strength and conditioning.

The results confirmed what I had been hearing for years from fighters, trainers, coaches and gym owners from all over the world.

Even when I was in Thailand; training at one of the top 10 UFC rated MMA and Muay Thai camps, I learned that fighters from around the world were also struggling with the same problems.

Let Me Tell You How I Discovered the Solution.

At the age of 40 years old, I was working in the corporate world while running some fitness boot camps and decided to start training in a combat sport that I held close to my heart but was unable to practice due to my pro volleyball career.

When got back into the sport, it wasn’t shortly thereafter I decided I wanted fight a professional Muay Thai fight in Thailand.

Talk about going from zero to sixty in seconds. I don’t mess around.

I quickly found out that the intense training for a Muay Thai fight was kicking my butt and needed a game plan. Although I was a personal trainer, the old traditional weight training and long cardio sessions on the treadmill I was doing were not giving me any help during the 2-3 hour high intensity Muay Thai classes.

There Are Thousands That Are Struggling With One Or More Of The Same Common Barriers.

I was still sucking wind and finding it hard to learn the techniques I needed to win this fight. Even though I trained hard it just wasn’t working.

Because I could not recover fast enough from the intense Muay Thai classes I started to miss conditioning training and even began to get sick often. My body was run down and I still hadn’t made any progress.

I was stuck without knowing what type of workouts to do that would help with proper conditioning for muay Thai, how to schedule my conditioning workouts so I could build cardio and strength and what to eat so I could burn fat, lose weight and recover faster between training.

So I began to do my own research on strength and conditioning, ask other trainers, other Muay Thai fighters, began to get my MMA Conditioning certification and even enlisted the help of a nutritionist to teach me what to eat and when.

I then developed and customized my plan, made a complete change in my strength and conditioning training, developed a scheduling template so I never missed a workouts and made a complete overhaul in my nutrition, which I continue to follow 4 years later.

THE RESULT - I went from a196lb to a174lbs, fully conditioned, ripped, Muay Thai wrecking machine that went to Thailand and came our victorious with a second round knockout!

Thus the solution that I am going to share with you today was born.

By following the solution about to share with you, I was able to customize workouts, to ensure I was hitting each aspect needed for a muay Thai Fighter in the ring.

I was able to schedule workouts around my very busy daily lifestyle, which allowed me to never miss a session.

The Workouts

What type of workouts, exercises and protocols do I include in my training program?

Traditional weight training focuses on isolation movements, which are great for bodybuilders trying to add size and muscularity, but MMA and other combat sports involve multiple joints and muscular moments.

Barrier Number Two:
How to Schedule Your Weekly Workouts

What do I do and when? How the ‘bleep’ do I fit it into my busy schedule?

There is nothing more annoying than trying to fit in your strength workouts and cardio sessions in each week? How many times have you been right on track one week, frequenting the gym four or five times, only to fall behind with only one workout the following week.

The result is missed workouts and this will be detrimental to your overall progress. If you have no cardio you won’t have the stamina to make it through drills or learn new techniques.

We all lead busy lives, whether it’s school, work, family or appointments that we have to attend along with our training. Some of you train 2, 3 and 4 X a week just on your sport. Monday is Muay Thai – Wednesday is BJJ and Friday is MMA and Grappling.

When the heck can you fit in your workouts as well as everything else? I feel your pain and it can become very overwhelming.

Today I am going to show you how to fit your strength and conditioning workouts into your weekly schedule so you never have to miss another workout.

While skill training needs to remain your primary focus, strength and conditioning cannot take a back seat.

The better conditioned athlete you are, the more effective and efficient you will be in the learning phase or enhancement phase of your combat fighting skills.

If you’re not a conditioned athlete… you will not get better. How can you practice that new move in sparing or rolling when you’re too gassed to even think?

”I started training Muay Thai at age 57.”

“I'm 57 going on 58 years old. In my youth, I was never athletic. In my late 30's I moved to Florida and took up surfing, and got in moderate shape. When my daughter was born 16 years ago, my neighbor gave me an old jogging stroller he had used with his daughter, and I began daily runs on the beach with my daughter. But - after 3 1/2 years - she got too big for the stroller. I really didn't like running alone. I then started training in Krav Maga. I did 2 1/2 years in my late 40's - early 50's. This was my first martial art, and I really got in shape. Then I did some Taekwon, and some traditional boxing. I joined a gym and met a guy, who became a good friend. He was a serious weight lifter, and really helped me a lot. I became the strongest I had ever been in my life. Then my friend got two jobs, and we could no longer work out together.

I fell into a kind of depression, quit working out, and let my diet go. I lost muscle and gained fat. I found Funk's channel around that time. It took a while, but I made the decision to get back in shape. I started using some of Funk's workouts, some in the gym, some bodyweight workouts in my back yard. It was particularly helpful that Funk had such a positive attitude in his videos - he even responded to some of my comments/emails, personally.

I still have a ways to go, but am in much better shape. I am using some of Funk's nutrition advice also. For 2013, I started training in Muay Thai. I don't think many guys begin Muay Thai training at age 57! The first couple of weeks were shadow hitting. Last week, we finally had to pair up to hit the pads. I am the oldest guy in the class by at least 10 years, and have the least training. I could see nobody wanted to be my partner. I walked up to the biggest guy in the class - six foot three, upper arms like my thighs, and said "I want the big man!". I held the pads first, then it was my turn to strike - and I rocked the big guy a few times! I made my rep in the class that night.
